"Three Lock Box" came out November 30th, 1982! Three Lock Box was my second album at Geffen Records and produced by Keith Olsen who also produced my first million seller "Standing Hampton".
The title was taken completely wrong and I almost had some difficulties with the big store chains thinking it was a sexual thing. But a "Three Lock Box" stands for mind, body, and spirit -- it was also a very valuable buried treasure usually belonging to royalty. When traveling at sea, Kings and Queens would have their valuables in a chest that took three keys to open.
I love this album a lot. Working with Keith was more comfortable second time around and I had a lot more freedom to experiment. "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" is still the highest charting Top 40 single of my solo career. "Remember The Heroes" turned out to be an anthem with our war veterans. And the title track was my first big MTV video when MTV was just starting out. That song along with "Rise of the Animal" has some nice progressive guitar work which I'm still proud of today.
This album being my second million seller kicked my live attendance on tour in the ass, selling out double arenas in nearly every major city. It's hard to believe it was that many years ago WOW!!!! For my ears this record still sounds great and holds up well like a fine wine.

Three Lock Box is a Sammy Hagar solo album, which features appearances by Loverboy's Mike Reno, Journey's Jonathan Cain, and Mr. Mister's Richard Page. His only Top 20 solo hit, "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy", reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. The title track refers not to sex, as commonly mistaken, but to a much more philosophical bent. "It's got to do with deep sea diving, when you look for a buried treasure. The ultimate treasure would be a sunken treasure with three locks on it, because that means it was the most valuable stuff that the queen had on that ship. And you need three different guys with keys to open it, that way no one could steal it. So a 'Three Lock Box' to me is within yourself. If you unlock the treasure of your physical, and your mental and your spiritual potential - those three in balance - you are a real human being and almost godly."

Three Lock Box is the second album of the 3 Sammy Hagar albums that were released in Brazil (I don't know what stupid criterion Brazilian record labels used to release albums here, I think it was by trial and error), but we also released it to the rock audience. Brazilian. "I Don't Need Love" was the song we helped promote and that our pub music hall goers loved to rock with their invisible guitars in their hands. Remember the Heroes, Your Love is Driving Me Crazy, Three Lock Box, Never Give Up are also songs enjoyed by Brazilian fans of Sammy Hagar. Great album too.

Hey Sammy I heard you in an interview way back where the interviewer asked you what three lock box means could've been mark and Brian or some DJ from kmet 94.7 anyway your answer was there's three lock to the box; button, zipper, panties. I thought that was the coolest answer.and it made a lot of sense. C.U. in indio sammy.
This tour was my first concert ever. March 12, 1983 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. I was 12 years old. Add that to your tourography so I can add it to my "I was there" list! :)

What a great album. I bought it years ago and listened to it over and over while I changed the waterpump in my first car. Now, I listen to it everytime I have a big project. I painted a room in my house recently and was jamming! " l've been locked up....in the room!"

Choosing a favorite of ANY Red song is like trying to choose which is your favorite child. Or like lays potato chips cant stop with one. Ask me to do something easy like put a spike through my head or burn one of my guitars. As Scotty would say "I cant do it captain, I just cant."

My First Sammy Hagar CD, other than the greatest hits ten serious.
My first Sammy album. Got this when I was 13 -- I had heard songs from Standing Hampton on a station out of upstate NY, which the nearest rock station I could get from my tiny town in PA. I've been a fan ever since.

Obviously, the hits were great from this album, "Three Lock Box" and "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" but some of the others that weren't on the radio were fantastic, like Rise of the Animal and Remember the Heroes with Mike Reno from Loverboy!
Funny how "I Don't Need Love" ended up on UnBoxed as one of his greatest hits but "Three Lock Box" wasn't on the Essential Red Collection. That reminds me, when Sammy and VH split I wrote a letter to VH telling them how stupid they were and how Sammy was the best thing that ever happened to them, etc., and I guess they forwarded it to Sammy's people at Geffen because I received a promo shot for UnBoxed, signed!
